School bus versus automobile training scenario with Eastwood Fire |
Training on this scenario began with a car rear-ending a school bus. Our goal was to lift the bus in order to extricate anyone in the automobile. |
STABILIZING THE BUS
Chief Mike Schmidt & Captain Dan Shirley (Eastwood) discuss the options on lifting the bus. |
Major Malcolm Jenkins talks about using the Res-Q jacks to stablize the bus before lifting. |
|
Res Q jacks were set at angles between 45 and 60 degrees & secured with a chain at the bottom.
|
The top of the jack was inserted along the bottom of the side rail, one of the stronger areas of the exterior. |

LIFTING THE BUS

After the bus was stablilized, the process of lifting began with the placement of cribbing and airbags. Cribbing was placed in two spots as a safety measure and the airbags were placed under the frame rails for lifting. |

Sgt. Scott Roeder attaches the airbag lines to the remote station then he simultaneously fills both airbags. As the bus lifts, more cribbing is placed underneath while the Res Q jacks are raised. This ensures the bus remains stable. |

After the bus is lifted to the appropriate height, we could now work around the bus to extricate any patients in the car.
After all patients have been removed, the bus could be lowered by reversing our setup methods.
